dc.description.abstract This study aimed at detecting the effect of emotional intelligence and problem solving ability on achievement within first level students at Mutah University, and its relation to gender and major. The sample consisted of (486) male and female students randomly chosen. The results indicated that there was a positive relationship between the emotional intelligence and problem solving ability, and no significant differences in the dimensions of both emotional intelligence and problem solving ability due to gender. The results also indicated that there were significant differences in the dimensions of emotional intelligence (emotions regulation and management) due to majors, and no differences in the dimension of empathy. Regarding the problems solving ability, differences were found in dimensions of confidence, avoidance, and personal control due to major. Discussion and recommendations were addressed accordingly. en_US
