The Semantics of Logic and Their Influence in Sībawayh’s Al-Kitab

Abstract

This paper focuses on the relationship between grammar, logic, and semantics. It examines the effect of the semantics of logic on grammatical structures in Sībawayh’s Al-Kitab. In this paper, I examine, describe, and analyze this topic’s prevalence in Sībawayh’s Al-Kitab. The rarity of the topic (i.e. the semantics of logic) and its source material (i.e. Sībawayh’s Al-Kitab) reflect the importance of this paper. The paper includes an introduction, two sections, and a conclusion. In the first section, I cover the topics of grammar, logic, and semantics by examining the following: the relationship between grammar and logic, the grammar of Arabic — its originality and its affectivity, and the semantics of logic and grammar. In the second section, I cover the topics of logic and Sībawayh’s Al-Kitab and the effect of semantics of logic on grammatical structures in Sībawayh’s Al-Kitab. I have concluded that there is an interplay between the elements of grammar and the elements of semantics found in grammatical structures. I have also concluded that the semantics of logic found in Sībawayh’s Al-Kitab have a number of standards including both a religious standard and a social standard.
