Abstract:
The study aimed to recognize the most important teaching compenetencies nessary for elementary art teachers in public education in Kuwait from the points of view of art teachers, supervisors, and heads of deparments. The study sample consisted of 250 art teachers, supervisors, and heads of departments. A 57-item questionnaire was used for five catagories of teaching competencies, and data were collected during fall semester 2009/ 2010. The results revealed that all participants agreed that all teaching competencies were important for elementary art teachers, and personal competencies are the most importance followed by execution, planning, academic, and evaluation competencies. There were significant differences attributed to gender, position, and experience. The study recommends incorporation and development of the teaching competencies within the Art Education National Standards in Kuwait for the preparation of art teachers. Further studies into the area are recommended.
