The Role of the Media in Promoting Environmental Awareness in Jordan

Abstract

This study evaluated the degree of the media success in promoting environmental awareness in Jordan by means of reviewing newspapers, journals, radio, television, and focused workshops and conferences. It was discovered that during the period 1990 - 2000, more than 160 issues dealing with the environment were covered. In addition to evaluating the influence of the media, a questionnaire was carried out on 1000 members of the general public. 78.7 % of the sample indicated that the media played a significant role in their environmental awareness, and 82.5 % believed that the media focused on the environmental problems that preoccupied the Jordanians. Using the F test the study found that at the confidence level (∝=0.05) there was no significant differences in the responses according to the district or level of the parents education. On the other hand the F test showed at the confidence level (∝=0.01) that there were significant differences in responses depending on gender, their dwelling place, and the job and income of the father
